Data Set 6: Effects of Host Species and Size on Parasitoid Size

چکیده

This handout illustrates two-factor ANOVA with both factors being fixed effects. Two versions of essentially the same data set are used: (A) a completely balanced data set, i.e. one in which there is equal replication of each treatment combination [this is a sub-set of the actual data set]; and (B) An unbalanced data set, with unequal replication of treatments but all treatment combinations present [this data set was artificially constructed but mimics the actual treatment effects]. The simpler balanced situation is used to illustrates the analysis of the three overall effects and comparisons among levels of factors; assessment of the validity of the ANOVA model also is briefly discussed for this data set. The second version illustrates the complications produced by unbalanced designs, and how these are dealt with. At the end of this handout are a detailed description of how to conduct a two-way fixed-effects ANOVA in Minitab, and a sketch of how to do so in SAS.

Data Set 6-II: Mixed-Model ANOVA of the Effects of Host Species and Size on Parasitoid Size Statistical Setting

This Handout illustrates traditional mixed-model ANOVA analyses of the data from my study of host effects on parasitoid larvae (Data Set 6) when the host species is treated as a random factor. Note: Treating species as random would not be reasonable in reality, given that these two moth species are the only common hosts for this parasitoid in North Carolina, where I conducted this study. It als...

Host diet aects extinctions and colonizations in a parasitoid metapopulation

1. In the AÊ land islands of SW Finland, the parasitoid Cotesia melitaearum (Wilkonson) is a specialist on the Glanville fritillary butter ̄y, Melitaea cinxia (L.), which uses two host plants, Plantago lanceolata (L.) and Veronica spicata (L.). 2. Extensive survey data on the butter ̄y and parasitoid populations collected in 1994±97 were used to examine possible associations of parasitoid coloniz...

Defensive behaviors of the Oriental armyworm Mythimna separata in response to different parasitoid species (Hymenoptera: Braconidae)

This study examined defensive behaviors of Mythimna separata (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) larvae varying in body size in response to two parasitoids varying in oviposition behavior; Microplitis mediator females sting the host with the ovipositor after climbing onto it while Meteorus pulchricornis females make the sting by standing at a close distance from the host. Mythimna separata larvae exhibite...

How two different host species influence the performance of a gregarious parasitoid: host size is not equal to host quality.

1. Hyssopus pallidus Askew (Hymenoptera, Eulophidae) is a gregarious ectoparasitoid of the two tortricid moths species Cydia molesta Busck and C. pomonella L. (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae). It paralyses and parasitizes different larval instars of both species inside the apple fruit, which leads to the death of the caterpillar. 2. We assessed the influence of host species characteristics and host f...

Development of teratocytes associated with Microctonus aethiopoides Loan (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) in natural and novel host species.

A laboratory study investigated development of teratocytes derived from the parasitoid Microctonus aethiopoides Loan in the natural host, Sitona discoideus Gyllenhal, and in three novel hosts, the introduced weed biological control agent Rhinocyllus conicus (Froehlich), and two New Zealand native species Nicaeana cervina Broun and Irenimus stolidus Broun. Weevils were exposed to parasitoids and...
